Dressmakers & Alterations
Elegant bridal gown with lace veil

Nkem means “mine” and that is the heart of the atelier.

Every garment is designed, fitted or altered with care, so it feels personal, comfortable and truly yours.

Whether you need wedding dress alterations, bespoke bridalwear, custom bridal changes, or a special occasion dress made or fitted in Bristol, Nkem Atelier offers careful, friendly and professional dressmaking to help your garment feel truly yours.

I can’t thank Alexandra enough for what she did with my wedding dress. When I first brought it in, it was too small and I honestly wasn’t sure it could be altered to fit properly. From the very first fitting, she put me at ease and was so patient and reassuring throughout the process. Each fitting brought the dress closer to perfection, and by the end it fit like it had been made for me. Not only did it look beautiful, but I felt comfortable and confident wearing it on my wedding day. I will keep recommending Nkem Atelier xx

Customisation

Nkem Atelier offers custom changes for clients who already have a dress but would like it to feel more personal, more flattering or more suited to their day.

This can include adding sleeves, changing the neckline, reshaping the bodice, adding lace, softening the design, or creating new details that make the dress feel closer to your style.

If you have a loved one’s clothing, a sentimental fabric or an existing dress you would like transformed into something meaningful for your wedding day or special occasion, we can discuss how to carefully include it in your garment.

FAQs

How far before my wedding should I come in?

For bespoke pieces, I recommend enquiring as early as possible. Around 6 months before your wedding or event is a good minimum, but a year before is ideal for more detailed designs.

What is the bespoke process?

The process starts with a consultation to discuss your design, fabric, fit and the feeling you want for the garment. From there, we plan fittings and construction so the dress develops carefully from idea to finished piece.

How much does a bespoke dress cost? And do you offer payment plans?

Bespoke services start from £600. The final price depends on the design, fabric, detail and time needed. Payment stages can be discussed before work begins.

Do you only make wedding dresses?

No. Nkem Atelier creates bridal pieces, civil ceremony looks, reception dresses and special occasion dresses.

What happens if I change my mind on the design?

We discuss the design carefully before work begins, but some changes can be made during the process. Larger changes may affect the price and timeline.

What happens if I change size?

Because bespoke garments are made through fittings, some fit changes can be managed during the process. Please let me know as soon as possible if your size changes.

Do I need to source my own fabric?

No. Fabric options can be discussed during your consultation, and you are also welcome to bring a fabric you love so we can assess whether it is suitable.

I had my custom graduation dress and custom-made civil wedding dress made by Nkem Atelier, and I absolutely loved them. The dresses were beautifully made, fit perfectly, and exceeded my expectations. The attention to detail and craftsmanship were exceptional, and I received so many compliments on the day. I highly recommend Nkem Atelier for anyone looking for a stunning bespoke outfit for a special occasion.

I absolutely loved my wedding dress, but after Nkem Atelier worked on it, I couldn’t believe how beautiful it became. Nkem took in the sides for a perfect fit, shortened the length of my lace wedding dress, added a stunning bustle that created a beautiful drape at the back of my train, and designed a bespoke corset that gave my dress the unique touch it was missing. Her attention to detail and craftsmanship were exceptional. She truly transformed my dress and made it feel one of a kind. I couldn’t have been happier with the result and would highly recommend Nkem Atelier to any bride looking for expert alterations xx

Bridal & Special Dress Alterations — Everything You Need to Know

Fit is the final detail.

Alterations are not just about making a dress smaller or shorter. They are about helping the dress sit properly on your body, move comfortably with you and feel secure for the moment you are wearing it.

When should I book my alterations?

For bridal alterations, it is best to enquire as soon as you have your dress and your wedding date is confirmed. The main alteration work is usually carried out closer to the wedding, often around 8–12 weeks before the day, with a final fitting nearer the date.

What happens at the first fitting?

At your first fitting, I look at how the dress sits on your body, the hem length, bodice fit, bust support, sleeves, straps, train, bustle and any design details that may need adjusting. I also check the construction of the dress, including the layers, lining, lace, beading, boning and seam allowance.

Can I send photos before booking?

Yes. Photos are very helpful for an initial idea of what may be possible. However, the final quote is confirmed after seeing the dress on you in person, because construction and fit can only be properly assessed during the fitting.

What if my weight or shape changes before the wedding?

This is very common, so please do not worry. Bodies can naturally change during wedding planning. This is why fittings are planned carefully, and the final fitting is usually kept closer to the wedding date. If you notice a change in your body or the dress starts feeling different, let me know as early as possible so we can plan the best approach.

What areas are commonly altered?

  • Hem length and lining length
  • Sides, waist, bust and hip fit
  • Straps, sleeves and armholes
  • Bodice shape and support
  • Train, bustle and movement
  • Lace, beading and appliqué placement

What should I bring to my fitting?

Please bring the shoes or heel height you plan to wear, any underwear or shapewear you are considering, and any accessories that may affect the final look. For bridal fittings, you are welcome to bring up to two guests for support.

The aim is always for the dress to look like it was made for you, not like it has been altered.

Bespoke & Custom-Made Bridal and Special Dresses — Everything You Need to Know

Made for the woman, not the rail.
Pattern paper and pattern cutting tools in the studio
Dressmaking and design work on a mannequin

Bespoke dressmaking is for clients who want something personal, considered and made around them from the beginning. It is also for women who have tried dresses on and feel either overwhelmed by too many options or underwhelmed because nothing feels quite right.

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

No. Many clients come with a feeling rather than a fixed design. During the consultation, we talk about what you like, what you do not like, how you want the day or occasion to feel, and what styles make you feel confident. This helps narrow the design direction naturally.

What happens during the consultation?

We discuss your occasion, inspiration photos, colour, fabric, shape, neckline, sleeves, length, details, budget and timescale. We can also look at sketches or fabric ideas to help decide the final design direction.

How does the custom-made process work?

  1. Consultation to understand your ideas and what you want the dress to feel like.
  2. Design direction, fabric discussion and quotation.
  3. Measurements and pattern planning.
  4. Making the dress with fittings along the way.
  5. Final fitting and finishing details.

Can I bring my own fabric?

Yes, you can bring your own fabric if you already have something in mind. I can also discuss suitable fabric options from my fabric samples or advise what type of fabric may work best for the design.

Are fit changes charged separately?

No. Fit adjustments during the bespoke process are part of creating the dress and are included within the agreed quotation. If the design itself changes significantly after work has started, this may affect the price or timeline, but normal fit development is part of the process.

Who is bespoke best for?

Bespoke is ideal for brides, reception looks, civil ceremony outfits, prom dresses and special occasion clients who want a dress that feels personal rather than chosen from a rail.

A bespoke dress begins with conversation, not pressure. The design develops around you.

Bridal Dressing — Wedding Morning Support and What to Expect

Calm morning. Beautiful exit.
Hands fastening the back of a bride's wedding dress

Bridal dressing is for brides who want their wedding morning to feel calm, organised and professionally supported. It is not only for a particular dress shape or style. It is for any bride who wants peace of mind that a professional is there to help with the dress, veil, train and final appearance.

What is bridal dressing?

It is wedding morning support to help you get dressed properly and feel confident before leaving for the ceremony. I help with your gown, shoes, jewellery, veil, fastenings, train and any final adjustments needed for photos and walking down the aisle.

Why book a bridal dresser?

On the morning of the wedding, friends and family should be able to enjoy the moment with you. A bridal dresser helps remove the stress of working out where everything goes, how the dress fastens, how the veil sits or how the train should be arranged.

What happens on the morning?

  1. Your dress, veil, shoes and jewellery are set out carefully.
  2. The dress is checked, steamed if booked, and prepared for wearing.
  3. You are helped into your gown calmly and carefully.
  4. The veil, train, fastenings and final details are arranged.
  5. Your look is checked for photos, first looks and leaving for the ceremony.

Can this help with photos and first looks?

Yes. Bridal dressing helps make sure you are ready for those special moments without stress. This can include making sure your dress, veil, jewellery and shoes are ready before bridesmaids or family come in for a first look.

What little issues can be helped with?

Sometimes it is the small things that create stress: a twisted strap, a veil that needs repositioning, a train that needs arranging, a zip or buttons that need careful handling, or a dress that needs a final steam. Having professional support helps keep the morning calm.

The goal is for you to feel looked after, luxury, calm and ready before you walk down the aisle.

From Denim to Bridalwear — My Master’s Degree Upcycling Project

From waste to wedding.
Upcycled denim wedding dress with flower petal detail at the front
Back view of upcycled denim wedding dress with lace-up detail

During my Master’s degree in Fashion Design, I explored how denim could be transformed into bridalwear. Denim is one of the most familiar fabrics in everyday wardrobes, but it is also strong, versatile and full of design possibility.

What did I create?

I upcycled denim trousers into a wedding dress with a mermaid silhouette and a small train. The front of the dress was decorated with rose petal cut-outs made from dyed denim, with pearl embellishment used to secure the petals and add a bridal finish.

How was the colour created?

The colour palette was created using food-waste dyes, including onion peel, turmeric, red cabbage and lemon juice. Onion peel mixed with red cabbage and a few drops of turmeric created a magenta tone. Turmeric created yellow, and turmeric mixed with a few drops of onion peel and red cabbage created orange.

Why denim?

Denim is a must-have fabric in many wardrobes, but unwanted denim often becomes waste. Using it in bridalwear challenged the idea that wedding dresses must always be made from traditional synthetic bridal fabrics.

Why does upcycling matter?

Upcycling used denim into a wedding dress is a way of reducing textile waste and exploring how existing garments can be given a new life. Using colour from food waste also opens a conversation about reducing the impact of chemical dye waste on soil and the environment.

How does this connect to Nkem Atelier?

This project reflects the way I approach dressmaking: creatively, carefully and with respect for fabric, fit and story. Whether I am altering a wedding dress, customising an existing garment or creating a bespoke piece, I always think about how clothing can feel personal and meaningful.

The project was not just about denim. It was about seeing possibility in what already exists.

About Nkem Atelier

Personal dressmaking, bridalwear and considered design

What Nkem Atelier is about

Nkem Atelier is a Bristol-based dressmaking and bridal atelier founded by Nkemdilim Alexandra, a fashion designer, dressmaker and bridal seamstress.

The name Nkem means “mine”, and that meaning is at the heart of the atelier. Every garment is created, fitted or transformed with the intention of making each woman feel that what she is wearing truly belongs to her.

Nkem Atelier sits between bridalwear, dressmaking and personal design. It is for women who want garments that feel thoughtful, beautifully fitted and personal to their story.

In the bridal space, the atelier offers wedding dress alterations, bespoke bridalwear and custom bridal changes with a calm, careful and design-led approach. In the dressmaking space, Nkem Atelier creates and alters dresses for prom, bridesmaids and special occasions, offering a more personal alternative to ready-made fashion.

My love for fashion began early. I grew up around bridalwear and celebration, watching my mother run her bridal boutique and bring brides’ ideas to life. That experience shaped the way I see clothing, not just as something to wear, but as something that can hold confidence, identity and emotion.

After moving from Nigeria to the UK, I completed a Master’s degree in Fashion Design at Cardiff Metropolitan University. I have been dressmaking since 2019 and working within bridal design and bridalwear since 2022.

Nkem Atelier is known for careful fittings, feminine details, thoughtful design and garments that feel personal rather than generic.

For me, dressmaking is about helping women feel beautiful, confident, elegant and completely themselves.
